American midfielder leaves Arsenal for MLS side

American midfielder Gedion Zelalem has left Arsenal to sign for MLS side Sporting Kansas City.

The news was confirmed on Monday, and brings down the curtain on an Arsenal career that promised much but was thwarted by injury.

Born in Germany in 1997, Zelalem and his family moved to the United States where he was spotted playing in youth tournaments. He joined the Arsenal academy, and was once tipped for the very top in North London. However, he only made four senior appearances for the Gunners, one in the Champions League, one in the FA Cup, and twice in the League Cup, with a serious knee injury blighting his time at the club.

Loan spells with Rangers and VVV Venlo followed, but he was unable to recapture the form that made him such a prospect at youth level, and now he has moved back to America in the hopes of restarting his career.
