Benitez targets signings as Newcastle slip into bottom-three

premier league transfers

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has said that the club needs to be active in the transfer window in January, following Saturday’s 1 – 0 defeat to Arsenal which saw his team slip into the bottom three, after a run of games which has seen the Toon collect only one point from a possible 27.

Benitez pointed to the youth of his team and its lack of experience as key factors behind the current slump, with new players needed to add quality and depth to the current squad.

One factor, however, complicating factors behind the scenes is the issue of ownership, with current owner Mike Ashley currently negotiating a sale to a group of investors led by financier Amanda Staveley. The timing of the takeover will decide how much Benitez is given to spend in January, but the team’s current poor performances may affect the price that Staveley and her consortium are prepared to pay for Newcastle, as they do not want to buy a team headed back to The Championship.
