Cardiff City sign Preston defender

Newly promoted Cardiff City have further strengthened their side ahead of the new defender by signing defender Greg Cunningham from Preston.

The Republic of Ireland player has joined Cardiff on a three-year deal, although it is thought to be in the region of £4 million.

The 27-year old left back began his career at Manchester City, for whom he made two senior appearances, before joining Bristol City in 2012.  That was followed, three years later by the move to Preston, for whom he made 111 appearances, and went on to captain the side.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Cardiff manager Neil Warnock said: “It’s fair to say that I’ve been an admirer of Greg for a number of years and that he’s consistently been one of the best left-sided defenders for club and country.  I anticipate that Greg coming in will give us a lot of strength down that left-hand side.”

Cunningham becomes Cardiff’s second signing in a matter of deals, following the arrival of Josh Murphy from Norwich City on Thursday in a deal worth around £11 million.

That is not likely to be the end of the transfer activity either at Cardiff, as the club are looking to make another three transfers at least before the window closes in August.
