Chelsea identify interim manager

Chelsea may follow Manchester United’s lead and appoint an interim manager to lead them in the event that Maurizio Sarri is sacked.

The 60-year old Italian is under intense pressure following his side’s 6 – 0 humiliation by Manchester City on the weekend, and there is speculation that the club hierarchy are prepared to jettison him after less than seven months in charge, after a run of heavy defeats, and his continuing struggles to motivate the Chelsea players.

According to The Mirror, the man they are lining-up to replace him for the rest of the season is assistant manager Gianfranco Zola, who is a popular figure at the club amongst both players and fans, and could be the man to steady matters before the next permanent manager is identified and put in place in the summer.

Although very successful as a player, Zola has not enjoyed a stellar career as a manager, and resigned from his last role with Birmingham City after winning just twice in twenty-four games.
