David Luiz set for new contract talks

Brazilian defender David Luiz is set to open talks about a new contract with Chelsea.

The 31-year is out of contract in the summer, and the Stamford Bridge side want to secure his future with a new £125,000 a week deal.

All this represents a dramatic turnaround for Luiz who fell out of favour with previous Chelsea manager Antonio Conte after criticising the Italian’s tactics after a Champions League defeat to Roma last October, and he was essentially consigned to the wilderness in the second half of last season.

He was widely expected to leave the club in the summer, but, instead, decided to stay and fight for his place under new man Maurizio Sarri, which has proved to be a wise decision. He has since forced his way back into the side which lead the Premier League on goal difference from Liverpool, with both sides having won all of their opening 5 fixtures.

Sarri said: David has a big future here — he will be very useful for us. I don’t know what happened in the past but now he has a good chance.”
