Everton bid for Barcelona defender after Celtic star proves too costly

Everton have bid £18 million to sign Barcelona left-back Lucas Digne.

The Toffees are in the market to find a long-term replacement for Leighton Baines, and had identified Celtic’s Kieran Tierney as their main target. However, according to The Daily Mail, Celtic’s valuation of Tierney at £25 million is too rich for Everton and they have turned their attention to cheaper options.

25-year old Digne, who has 21 full international caps for France, has been at Barcelona since 2016, after moving from Paris Saint-Germain in a £14 million deal in July of that year. However, he has found his path to regular first-team football at the Nou Camp blocked by the ever reliable Jordi Alba, and is ready to move elsewhere to restart his career.

His current release clause is €90 million (£80 million) but indications are that Barcelona are willing to let Digne, who is under contract until 2021, leave for a fraction of that price.
