Liverpool eyeing another Dutch defender

The Mirror reports that Liverpool have earmarked Lazio’s Dutch defender Stefan de Vrij as a possible transfer target. Whilst the Anfield club are said to be very much still interested in Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk, there appears to be a number of obstacles in the way of such a deal, not the least of which is the south coast’s club’s refusal to sell their star player.

As a result, Liverpool have turned their attention to van Dijk’s compatriot de Vrij, who will be out of contract with the Rome club at the end of the season.  Lazio apparently want to offer the defender, who has 31 caps for his country, a new contract, but want in it a buy-out clause of €45 million in it, which the player, who wants a low figure, has refused to sign.

Now Liverpool, who are desperately in need to defensive reinforcements to shore up their Premiership and Champions League challenge, may offer de Vrij an escape from his contractual impasse by bringing him to the Premier League.
