Manchester United trigger Martial extension

Manchester United have triggered an option in Anthony Martial’s contract which allows them to extend his stay at Old Trafford by a further year to 2020.

However, for United fans who are ready to celebrate the good news, their enthusiasm should be tempered by the news that hopes of a more permanent long-term deal for the French international seem distant, with the BBC quoting Martial’s agent as saying “”They have already sent us offers that do not meet our expectations, starting at bases very far from our wishes. We are far from an agreement for the time being,” he said.

Martial joined United from French side Monaco in 2015 and he has since gone on to make 99 Premier League appearances for them, scoring 31 goals. He is the club’s top scorer this season with seven goals from nine starts, despite not always enjoying the best of relations with his manager Jose Mourinho, who has benched him on a number of occasions, and criticised the 23-year old when he refused to return promptly to the club’s pre-season tour of the USA, following the birth of his child.
