Agreement has apparently been reached between Arsenal and former player Marc Overmars for the Dutchman to become the club’s first Director of Football next summer.
Manager Arsene Wenger has long been opposed to such an appointment, claiming that he did not understand what the role entailed. However, with the Frenchman’s long tenure in North London drawing to an end, Arsenal are keen to plan for the future, and want Overmars in place to ensure a smooth transition to a new manager.
44-year old Overmars knows Arsenal well, having made 100 appearances for the team between 1997 and 2000, and helping the team to a League and Cup double, before a big money move to Barcelona. He is also familiar with the role of Director of Football – he has held a similar position with Ajax since 2012, during which time the Amsterdam club have won 3 Eredivisie titles.
