Newcastle in negotiations to sign Swiss centre-back

Newcastle are negotiating with Spanish side Deportivo La Coruña  about signing their Swiss centre-half Fabian Schär.

According to The Daily Mail, Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez is looking to add defensive cover to his squad, and Schär who has a £3.5 million release clause following Deportivo’s relegation from the top flight of Spanish option, is seen as a cheap option.

Schär only joined the Spanish team a year ago from German team Hoffenheim, signing on a four-year contract, but Deportivo’s relegation to Segunda means he may be allowed to leave early.

Known as a ball-playing defender with good aerial ability and a prowess at dead-ball situations, Schär is a former Swiss Young Player of the Year, and has 42 full international caps to his name. He appeared in all of his country’s Group games at the World Cup, although he was ruled out of Switzerland’s last-16 defeat to Sweden after picking up a ban for having collected two yellow cards.
