Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that he tried to sign Fiorentina captain, Davide Astori, who tragically passed away last weekend, when he was manager of Southampton, reports The Daily Telegraph.
The paper quotes Pochettino who said “I had the possibility to meet him five years ago because it was my idea to sign him when we were at Southampton….he was a great kid, great person, great professional, great player.”
Astori was staying in a hotel with his Fiorentina team-mates ahead of their game with Udinese, when he passed away in his sleep, probably because of a cardiac arrest. His sudden death at the age of 31 has shocked football, not only in Italy, where Sunday’s Serie A matches were cancelled in tribute, but across the world.
In honour of the player who won 14 caps for Italy, a minute’s silence was observed at Wembley on Wednesday night before Tottenham’s Champions League match against Juventus. Meanwhile Fiorentina and Astori’s former club have retired the number 13 shirt that the defender wore whilst playing for them.
