Southampton ready to sign giant Danish centre-half

Southampton are close to signing Danish centre-half Jannik Vestergard, who is due to undergo a medical at St. Mary’s on Monday.

The giant defender, who is 6 ft. 7ins tall, and is currently playing for German side Borussia Mönchengladbach, has earned a reputation as one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga, and, reports The Sun, Southampton have had to beat off competition from the likes of Everton, West Ham and Watford, to sign him.

Vestergard was part of Denmark’s World Cup squad this summer, but was confined to the bench throughout the tournament and did not make a single appearance.

If the signing is complete, Vestergard will become Southampton’s third purchase of the summer window, after the arrivals of Stuart Armstrong from Celtic and winger Mohamed Elyounoussi from Swiss side FC Basel.

He will also assume the mantle of the tallest player in the Premier League, which is currently worn by Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
