United linked with January move for Swedish World Cup captain

Reports have emerged linking Manchester United with a move in the January transfer window for Andreas Granqvist, who captained Sweden in this year’s World Cup.

Granqvist, who currently plays for Helsingborg in his native Sweden, has had a varied career, which included a 14 game spell at Wigan Athletic, as well as sojourns in Holland, Italy and Russia.

Now he could be set for a move to the Premier League as Jose Mourinho desperately looks for reinforcements to prop-up his ailing defence. At 33 years old, Granqvist is not one for the future, so any move for him would be on a loan basis only, as The Daily Mirror reports.

Granqvist is aware of the interest and speaking to local news outlet FotbollDireckt said “I know that there is a lot of interest for me. United is incredibly flattering but I have not heard anything concrete yet”.

Meanwhile, United’s off-the-field problems continue, with the latest controversy coming after captain Antonio Valencia had to apologise for “liking” an Instagram post that call for Mourinho to be sacked.
