United step up interest in Brazilian midfielder as City interest fades

According to The Daily Telegraph Manchester United are now favourites to sign Shaktar Donetsk midfielder Fred, as their local rivals City’s interest in the player has cooled.

City were heavily linked with the Brazilian midfielder during the January transfer window, but, with his club still involved with The Champions League at the time, they were unable to get the deal done. It was widely assumed that they would come back in for the 25-year old once the summer transfer window opened, but their interest has now waned and they are said to be looking elsewhere.

That now puts United in pole position to sign him, especially after Shaktar chief executive, Sergei Palkin, confirmed on Tuesday that the £40 million rated midfielder would be leaving the club in the summer and that he expected the player would be moving to Manchester.

Palkin told Corriere dello Sport “Fred will leave this summer. If not to Manchester City, then to Manchester United. He is ready for the best championships. In addition to being very good, Fred is very professional”.
