West Ham close on deal for Uruguay striker

West Ham United are close to agreeing a deal for Uruguayan striker Maxi Gomez, who is currently playing for Celta Vigo in Spain.

Gomez has a £44 million release clause in his contract which would be a record fee for West Ham, but one that, according to The Daily Mail they are ready to pay. However, Gomez has yet to be convinced that West Ham is the right club for him, and they may need to wait until the summer until they get their man.

West Ham are in the market for a new striker, with Marko Arnautuvic unsettled and told he can leave at the end of the season after his big money move to China fell through. Andy Carroll is out of contract in June, whilst Javier Hernandez has been linked with a move to Valencia. Meanwhile, Lucas Perez, a summer signing, has barely played and wants to go back to Spain.
