West Ham ready to swoop for Arsenal target at the end of the season

The Daily Mirror reports that West Ham are ready to swoop for West Bromwich Albion captain Jonny Evans at the end of the season if the Baggies fail to escape relegation.

The 30-year old centre-half is highly rated and was linked with big money moves to both Manchester City and Arsenal in the last transfer window. However, City eventually bought Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao, whilst Arsenal decided not to pursue their interest because of the player’s age.

Evans was valued at £25 million by his club whilst the transfer speculation was swirling round him, but a clause in his contract means that West Brom will be forced to sell him for only £3 million if they are relegated, which looks increasingly likely with the club rooted to the bottom of the Premier League.

That has alerted West Ham, who are watching developments with interest, along with Leicester and Everton.

The former United defender made headlines recently for the wrong reasons when he was one of four West Brom players accused of stealing a Barcelona taxi during a mid-season trip abroad for warm weather training. He was temporarily stripped of the captaincy, but the arm-band has since been restored after charges relating to the incident were dropped.
